Eleven riders assembled near the Delaware Park golf course on a sunny, but windy (15 to 25+ mph), morning. We pedaled through Delaware Park then continued along the Scajaquada bike path. As we reached the railroad/pedestrian bridge that crosses over the I-190 and Black Rock Canal, we encountered a closed gate and a “Riverwalk Closed” sign. While we were assessing our options a bell sounded and, to our surprise and delight, the 137 year old bridge began to swing. After the bridge completed its ninety degree rotation we watched several boats, including a tall-masted sail boat, exit the lock and continue on toward the lake. In over ten years of biking to Squaw Island I, as well as most of our group, have never seen that bridge in operation. Our ride over Squaw Island and along the river to Erie Basin Marina was pleasant and the wind was less of a factor than had been anticipated. After lunch at The Hatch, we rode to the old Erie Canal Commercial Slip and then on to see the world’s oldest working fire boat, the Edward M. Cotter. Shortly after our arrival, the Cotter cast off from the dock and proceeded down the Buffalo River followed by a mini parade of kayaks. Very few of our group had previously seen the Cotter underway. As we pedaled back along LaSalle Park on our way to the Frank Lloyd Wright Boat house, the wind off the lake was a force to be reckoned with. While we were enjoying the view from the boat house, the Miss Buffalo cruised by and the boat passengers and cyclists exchanged waves. The last leg of our ride was made easier by the occasional push from behind by the gusty winds. Considering the distance traveled, and the wind, our cars were a welcome sight. Submitted by Ron Dorr
