Outings Corner
Sultz's Trailhead Register
The Farmer's Almanac is predicting a mild November and
a cold, snowy winter. Sounds good to me. On a gor- geous, sunny winter
day last year I played with my new snowshoes in Erie County Forest. In
addition to snowshoe- ing, this year I plan to investigate winter
camping. While it would extend camping season for me, my
wife suspects it may be a ploy to buy more gear. Our chapter has
experts for all winter endeavors that can help with gear or tech-nique advice. Don't be afraid to try something new. As the weather becomes less predicable, we remind all outings participants to be prepared- even for seemingly simple outings. The “Ten Essentials” are considered the standard minimum and include: map, compass, flash- light/headlamp (be sure to have an extra set of batteries that fit your flashlight/headlamp), extra food, extra clothing, rain gear, first aid supplies (be sure to include an extra day of any medication you are taking or might need in an emergency), pocket knife, matches or lighter, fire starter. Perhaps the cheapest and most useful item is a whistle. I keep one on my key chain and one on my compass. Even experienced participants occasionally have problems. Our ADK chapter always blends education, recreation and conservation. Carpooling is a great way to get every- one to the trail head while conserving gas and money. As gas costs remain high, we remind all members to con- tribute to the cost of carpooling, usually including gas and tolls. The Executive Committee has discussed various guidelines for reimbursement, but the most sensible solu- tion seems to be dependent on our members sense of fair- ness and generosity. Our thanks go to Greg Heim for a great cross country ski season last year. Before the snow flies, though, we are looking for a new cross country ski co-chair to coordinate the ski outings. If you are interested, or know someone who would make a good co-chair, please contact me at adkouting.js@gmail.com or 716-639-7579. |
