Canoe Pack & Hike Trip - Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario  begins at Charlton Lake accessemail
We start with a 250 mile drive to the Charlton Lake access point on Thursday, August 7th. The drive will start at 3 a.m. and take about eight hours. With a nine kilometer paddle of Charlton, Frood Lakes and Cranberry Bay and a 1745 meter (m.) portage, we will establish our campsite on beautiful Grace Lake for the first night. A view here was featured on the cover of Bell Canada’s 1993 Ontario directory, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the provincial park system. This spectacular lake embodies much of what Ontario’s parks are all about. Then on Friday, we do the 2085 m. portage to Carmichael/Nellie Lake. Nellie Lake is a long fjord-like lake with crystal clear azure-blue water and visibility to 30 meters. This area was the subject matter for Canada’s “Group of Seven” artists. On Friday we tackle the 1470 m. portage to Murray Lake. This portage is fairly strenuous. We will paddle along Howry Creek and cross the easy 465 m. portage to Howry Lake. This will be our home for the night. At each of the stops there will be a chance to swim, read and take pictures. We can day-hike the ridges north and south of the lakes, which have great perspectives on the surrounding area. Saturday, we start back by paddling and portaging back to Murray Lake. Sunday, we start early go against the possibly heavy westerly headwinds through Murray and Charlton Lakes before our long drive home. This trip promises to offer a balance of challenge and reward. We are limited to nine on an interior permit, so send your $20.00 deposit to reserve your spot. call to get address 564-2106 or email schraven@bluemoon.net

Besides doing the bike ride and hike, this trip hopes to stop at the recently reopened “Udder Delights” ice cream shop in Gasport.
