Sat Jul 11BICYCLE - St. Catharines To Port Dalhousie   Ontario, CanadaB+ email
Saturday contact Mike at 297-3126 It’s about a Twenty-five mile loop around the city of St. Catharines. Some of it follows the old Merrit Canal system. The first mile and a half parallels the Welland Canal and the locks – which means a long uphill. Then it’s through some suburbs, parks, trails of hard packed gravel, and a few more small hills and bridges. On Our way to Port Dalhousie we’ll bike along a swift moving river and on to an island to possibly see some competitive sculling. Well break for lunch at the beach at Port Dalhousie and a five cent merry-go-round, and of course an ice cream cone. From there it’s a nice ride along Lake Ontario’s south shore, then more trails through the woods and back to the Welland Canal. This ride takes time because of the trails, turns, hills, and great scenery so allow at least four or five hours. Bring lunch, helmet, the required boarder crossing documents, water, a tire patch kit, and a sense of adven- ture. We’ll meet at St. Mary’s Hospital parking lot at 9AM. Call if you intend to come.

Sun Aug 2PADDLE - ANNUAL ADK LOCKS PADDLE  Lockport email
Sunday contact Bob Van Hise or sendgossiptome@yahoo.com August 2nd will be our Annual ADK Paddle through the Locks in Lockport, NY. We'll meet at Wide Water Marina in Lockport at 10am and paddle up the canal and through both locks. PFDs are required, and I also suggest bringing along water, a snack (to pass, if you'd like), a rope, and a glove or plastic bag to use for holding onto the slimy cables as we lock through. I will supply the words to the Erie Canal Song for those who wish to sing along. After the world’s best vertical paddle, we will paddle under what used to be the widest bridge in the world, and then rack up to enjoy a snack together as we start the float back. There is a hot dog stand across the street from Wide Waters, or we can picnic lunch in the park after the paddle. Contact Keith or me at sendgossiptome@yahoo.com if you have any questions or if you're interested in co-leading this pad- dle with me.
Wed Aug 5FLAT WATER PADDLE - Point Breeze to Waterport  Lower Oak Orchard Riveremail
Wed contact Richard 564-2106 or schraven@bluemoon.net This is a leisurely paddle of the lower part of the river. We put in at the Orleans County Boat dock at Point Breeze, where the Oak Orchard River empties into Lake Ontario. Initially we will be passing by marinas where charter fish- ing boats reside and then past the Oak Orchard Yacht Club. As we proceed we will start to see more wildlife. Flocks of geese, ducks and swans live here plus we will probably be following some Great Blue Heron. It’s a nice tranquil paddle for canoes and kayak to the Waterport Dam. On the way back, if we are so inclined we can inter- rupt our paddling with a hike up to Brown’s Berry Patch for a snack. The current in this section to the river is much slower than in the Medina to Lake Alice area, so moving water skills are not required. From the take-out spot at Point Breeze, any wanting to spend more time on the water can pass the break-wall and paddle along the Lake Ontario shore.

HIKE - Niagara Frontier Chapter’s Adirondack Weekend  at the Loj email
We have reserved the newly renovated loft at the Adirondack Loj, which has 10 beds, and a 6 person bunk room for this 4 day weekend. If you plan on participating you need to reserve a space in advance. We will have planned hikes all 4 days but anyone who comes can ‘do their own thing’ if they prefer. We can get together for breakfast and dinner at the Loj after a swim at the beach and talk about the different adventures we had. The planned hikes will not be in the high peaks unless someone else plans those. The hikes I am planning will be on mountains and have wonderful views. There are just too many beautiful places in the Adirondacks that are not high peaks but are beautiful. We would like to enjoy the unbeaten path and check these out. In addition it will be a great opportunity to get your ‘rock legs’ so to speak. The cost is $150 each for lodging 3 nights and a hot breakfast each morning. In addition the Loj charges $17 (tip included) for their wonderful all-you-can-eat dinners each evening. The dinners are optional. You can reserve your place for a deposit of $50 and can cancel up to June 1st to get refunded. Call Cheryl Peluso 648-9027 with questions and interest. More to come!

ADK FALL OUTING  - Discover the Lower Hudson Valley   email
This is a wonderful opportunity for ADK members to get to know more about the lower Hudson Valley, Harriman Park, and the New York metro area. New York City and all it has to offer is less than an hour's drive from Camp Nawakwa, the New York Chapter's Loj on Lake Sebago in Harriman Park, and it is also accessible by public transportation. There is great hiking with breathtaking views along the Hudson River, and Harriman Park is also home to many lakes for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Bear Mountain Park has a large natural lake, a zoo, and a beautiful carousel that children love. The activities available in this area for the outdoor enthusiast are far too numerous to list here, and the members of the New York Chapter encourage everyone to experience the region for themselves. For general information, contact Noel Schulz at noelschulz@verizon.net (201-445-6445), or the registrar, Janet Sibarium at janet@adkny.org (212-254-0738).
